Meat Canning

Once again the DUMC congregation has an opportunity to help can meat for distribution to the hungry both worldwide and locally at Bucks County food pantries and shelters. This is a wonderful teamwork opportunity!

   

 

The Mennonite Central Committee has a trailer truck with canning equipment that travels to 33 sites in eastern U.S. and Canada each year. It will arrive at their Souderton, PA site in late March. The MCC has been canning and distributing meat to the hungry for 66 seasons; during 2012 they shipped 390,000 cans of meat worldwide. The USDA monitors the canning process to insure sanitary processing.

 

Last year, 24 volunteers from DUMC helped to process and ship 15,600 cans. Our congregation, through cash donations, provided 1,000 cans (28oz) for distribution to the Bucks County food pantries and shelters through the Bucks County Opportunity Council.

 

Appeal:

(1) Sign the volunteer sheet located in the Narthex. On March 25, 26, 27, volunteers are needed each shift

(11:00 am – 3:00 pm and 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm) to help with the canning process at the MCC Material Resource Center in Souderton, PA

(2) Donate dollars. $2,700 is needed to purchase 1,000 cans of meat for distribution to our Bucks County neighbors in need. (That’s $2.70 per 28oz can of meat – a wonderful bargain!) Please make checks payable to DUMC with the notation “yes we can” on the memo line.
