Forming Small Groups

Do you attend church on Sundays, then never see the church until the following week? Wish you had some friends in church or knew someone to ask advice? Want some social time during the week and a chance to learn more about God? We started forming small groups a couple years ago and some of the original ones are still meeting with relationships that are still growing. But we don’t have many and we still have people struggling with how to get connected, make friends, and be an integral part of the church. Small groups is one way to break that barrier to get beyond just attending a Sunday morning church service.
I want to highlight two goals of small groups: Making Christian friends whom you can share your life’s highs and lows with, and growing in your faith. By having a group of 6-12 people meet regularly, study together, and talk about what’s on their hearts, the naturally become friends and support each other. This is also a great opportunity to learn more about your spouse and have some time together.
I know – one of the biggest barriers is time. We live these busy lives with days filled with our occupation and nights filled with running kids to activities or grabbing some fun or quiet time for ourselves when ever we can. That is why I am taking a different approach to forming groups. I believe if we can get together a group with a common free night to meet, they will discover their common interests and or histories that have crossed, but more importantly they will grow together while growing closer to God. They can dive into a few easy DVD series on basic themes, then discuss what areas they are most interested in or what subjects are weak and need some growth.
We have several DVD and traditional curriculum that covers a broad range of subjects, from Christian disciplines to living a Christian life in the day-to-day world, from raising kids to growing deeper in faith. The group is free to steer the topics or alternate between topics as they see fit.
So, there are no more excuses for feeling left out. I am definitely not “preaching to the choir”… I hope I am grabbing the attention of everyone who is not already at the church several days per week. If you have a desire to meet some other people from church, enjoy some Christian fellowship, and learn more about Christ, fill-out one of the questionnaire and indicate what times/days you are free. I will try to match up groups with common free time to help get this started. We will also try to consider where you live, to make it more convenient to meet in a home if that is possible. There will be questionnaires in the bulletins as well as on the information table.
